Importance of the association of legumes with cereals: case of soybean and maize

Intercropping is a very common practice among farmers, within a system that involves growing two or more plants in the same field during the same season to allow interactions between the component crops. The objective is to determine the results of the association of cereals with legumes, especially on maize and soybean monocultures. A literature review of the state of the art was made from the euristic and hermeneutic point of view, resorting to scientific articles published between 2018 and 2023, indexed in the Scopus and SciELO databases, using keywords such as "Legumes", "grasses", "associated crops", "Zea mayz", "Glycine max". The results highlight the evidence of a more effective use of soil resources in associated crops compared to monoculture crops, finding advantages obtained from associated crops, especially in the cereal-legume crop system, with special attention to the associated crop system of maize and soybean. Among the conclusions, the association of leguminous crops with other types of crops provides the additional advantage of growing legumes with minimal or no need for additional nitrogen fertilisers, thus achieving better productivity and profitability.
