Towards an effective safety culture: Knowledge and practices of Behavior-Based Mining Safety (BBS), Peru 2025

Abstract

The present study analyzes the level of understanding that workers have regarding Safety in the mining sector with a focus on behavior (SBC) at the Cambalache Mine, located in Lircay, Angaraes province, Huancavelica region, during the year 2019. For this, a quantitative method was applied, taking as a sample 15 collaborators, including workers and supervisors, belonging to the drilling and blasting areas on work fronts, support through untying and installation of panels, transportation, ore hauling, auxiliary services, equipment maintenance and loading of explosives in the drills. The findings reveal that, although workers recognize the relevance of safety, their understanding of the fundamentals of SBC is limited. Risky behaviors that affect workplace accidents were identified, which gives rise to the urgency of transforming the safety culture in mining activity. The work highlights the value of ongoing training and active participation of leaders to promote safe environments. safer behaviors in the mine in accordance with current regulations regarding mining OHS in Peru.
